The Different Types of Fireworks

Fireworks are available in many forms, each giving adifferent effect. They usually burn and give out flames or sparks in differentcolors.   • Aerial fireworks: These fireworks have chain fuses that send out aerial shells, mines or comets into the air from tubes producing different effects, colors and sounds. They come in a wide range of sizes and effects. Aerial fireworks are also known as repeaters or cakes.
  • Artillery shell: This consists of a cartridge with a pyrotechnic composition, an internal time fuse and a burst charge. A mortar launches it into the air resulting in a spectacular burst of fireworks.
  • Barrage: These are a sequence of firework effects that are rapidly fired.
  • Brocade: These fireworks give out big circular breaks of stars, which have long trails dripping down. The trails are usually gold or silver.
  • Break: The break refers to an aerial shell explosion. There are 4 shell and multiple breaks that rupture one after another. It is important to get sufficient clearance from the audience as the final break can be quite low.
  • Chrysanthemum: This is a spherical burst of stars in which the stars leave behind a trail of burning particles as they grow outward.
  • Comet: This consists of a fiery ball, which emits thick sparks as it rises and eventually fades away and disappears.
  • Fountains: As the name implies, it is a cone that sits on the ground and emits a shower of sparks. These can be golden or silver. A variation of the fountain is the waterfall, where the showers of sparks fall downward.
  • Wheels: These consist of a tube coiled around a wooden hub. Variations of wheels are called 'drivers'. The wheels in drivers are arranged in a radius on a set of spikes. Saxons is another variation where the tube is nailed at one end forming a pivot that spins when the free end is lit.    
  • Sparklers: Sparklers are very popular among children and comprise of sticks that emit short sparks of gold, silver or multi colors. They are best described as small hand held fountains.
  • Rocket: Rockets have fast fuses and are packed in a metal container and ignited. They fly up into the sky and sometimes give out effects like a crackle or stars. There are mainly two types of rockets- bottle rockets and skyrocket. The former are quite small, while skyrockets are bigger and come with beautiful effects.
  • Roman Candles: These are single tubes that emit multiple shots. They can be simple colored shots or complex ones that produce sounds and crackle. Some even shoot out and burst like aerial shells.
